Welcome to my blog

Today is a beautiful rainy spring day in Seldovia. A little wind, a little sun and here and there some sprinkles of rain.

I am making some homemade soup and finishing up some artwork. I am so glad you stopped by..please get yourself a cup of coffee and join me in my kitchen studio.

I have a regular studio upstairs ...but to tell you the truth..my kitchen table is where I do most of my art....with a cup of coffee and good friends stopping by to chat. Sit down and stay awhile..I am never too busy for company!

Fabulous Friday!

Well it is true...these little crabby guys are so addictive....and fun. And I think they really have invited a few of their friends to join them. There seems to be more on my table this morning than when I went to bed.....yikes.
Thank you to the www.oddfae.com lady for the class and www.dollstreetdreamer.com for having it available. I recommend that you visit their websites they are both pretty cool....I'm hooked!

Finished Turtles for Nancy

Paula delivered Nancy's birthday turtles. Here is a photo..

Critiques and adjustments

I have been doing Practice Rounds with a wonderful group that is so supportive and helpful. Here is the head I am working on at the moment. Judy is the individual who has been doing my critiques and she makes it so easy to understand what I need to work on, correct or become aware of....I have wanted to be an artist my whole life...by that I mean, sell my work and maybe help supplement my income....at least put my art out there for people to see. This group gives me that kind of support....

As you can see the above photos ..the before and after....the difference. I still need to make the adjustments that she suggested yesterday and I will do that right after I finish this entry.

I am so grateful for people like Judy and the members of this group, who, are helpful and so generous with their knowledge of the medium I am trying to learn....Thank you so much!

Rain and Ice

Another beautiful day here in Seldovia. Rain has turned the snow we had to slush and the roads and pathways to ice.....looks like an ice skating rink outside...pretty but slick!

I have been working on the practice rounds but yesterday I didn't get very much done. Instead I cleaned shells that my son Scott brought me. The boat gets them as they bring up their pots when they are fishing cod. So he brings the nice ones home to me to make in to something. But before I can do that they must be cleaned and all of the stinky stuff taken off of them. Then they must sit a week or two and dry and air out the smells. It smells an awful lot like stinky low tide in my kitchen right now. I am making the crew....I think there are 5 of them....a hermit crab sculpt in the empty shells, as a Thank You for gathering the shells.

I took an online workshop from OddFae.com to learn how to do these cute little creatures. Actually I think I paid for it at www.dollstreetdreamers.com an online store whose owner lives in North Pole Alaska....small world huh?

Anyway they are fun to do and I usually start giggling about halfway through sculpting, when they start taking on their own little character.

Practice Rounds

This week started the practice rounds for the Beginning Polymer Clay Group that I belong to. Here is a head I started yesterday at Tiffany's Crafters potluck luncheon. A bunch of us crafters got together with whatever we were working on and had lunch together.

Here is what I worked on. It is of course far from finished and only roughed in but, coming along nicely

Here is a photo of where it is now........I will work on it more this evening and post again tomorrow. I also had a chance to paint some of my little turtles....they are turning out sooooo very cute.

Very cold today 3* when I woke up and 8* right now. It will probably get colder tonight...but snow or rain by tuesday...which means warming up.....also....icy roads.

Turtles everywhere

Now these little turtles have legs. I still need to put in eyes and bake them....but each is developing a personality of its own. I will paint and finish with colorful beads and then they will be a gift for my friend Nancy O. who has the largest collection of sculpted turtles in the whole world!

Turtles for a friend

My friend Doug collects things. Sometimes it is fine porcelain and sometimes beautiful colored glass and at other times(like now) he is collecting estate jewelry. Anyway, he gives me the castoff one of..earrings...he finds in the boxes and some broken junky stuff..

So not wanting to waste anything I sat down one day and thought about what could I do with some of these items. Obviously the broken necklaces, bracelets and jewelry parts could be made in the Fairy crowns and various Fairy wardrobe pieces....but what to do with those clunky, chunky old earrings....well.....here is my solution!

Expectant Fairy?

I have decided to try a pregnant fairy. Just because sculpting a pregnant form would be a challenge and I sort of like to push myself to become better and to exceed my current skill level...I may or may not get it right ...but I will learn so much.

Here are some photos of her beginning.

She will be wearing a gauze drape attached at the shoulders, which will be bare...haven't decided on hair style or base...so somethings still need to be worked out.

Works in Progress 2011

Good Morning! The sun is just coming up here in Seldovia and it is going to be a beautiful day! I am posting some of the Wips(works in progress) that I have sitting on my work table. They don't look like much but will look much better after they are finished.

I have to admit that sometimes it takes me forever to finish a piece...especially if I am not inspired by it or my eyes get tired of looking at it. Then I need to put it away for awhile(weeks or months) and take it out again and see it with "new" eyes.....sometimes I just have looked at something so long that I don't really see it any more.

Here are some faces I am working on....perhaps will become Wendy Froud type creations. Meaning sculpted hands, head, feet and cloth, poseable body.
